Last week I wrote a little about the importance of missions. This week I want to mention a little bit about what missions might mean.
It's rather simple really. In a way we're ALL called to be missionaries. How? Well, the way we use the word missionary we're usually talking about people that go FAR away to reach people that have never been ministered too.
Is that something we should ALL be doing? Certainly not. For lots of reasons. The simplest reason is that we have needy souls in our own neighborhoods that might need us. Another reason is that many of the missionaries that are out in other countries are able to do their work because people like you and I are back in our own comfortable places earning money that we can donate to them. This role(yes, that is an active role in missions) is vital. Without support many missionaries would come back to their homes and not have the opportunity to spread the gospel to other nations.

So, if we're not ALL called to be out serving in other countries, are we still to be missionaries?
Well, in a way yes.
Obviously we can play a HUGE part in overseas missions simply by offering financial support and/or praying. But there's plenty more we can do without leaving our normal every day life.
Like what?
In Matthew 5: 15-16
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

I can find plenty of other verses that give examples here, but basically, we're ALL called to be an example to the world. We are to let our light shine, so they may see.
Where as only some are called to go into the world, out in hard to reach places doing missions work, being a positive example to the world and teaching others about Christ is NOT a gift only some are given. It's not something that only some are called to do. We are ALL called to this, to minister to others.
How might be another story, but the fact is that we all have this responsibility.

I might as well mention a little bit about the how... As with overseas missions the possibilities are quite simple. You're either called to do it or you're not. And if you're not, you still have options such as financial support and prayer support. Both of these roles are VERY important to the people that are overseas.

But what about this responsibility of us ALL needing to reach out to the world around us?
Well, take a look at Romans chapter 12. This is a passage about being one body with many members, and about some of the different gifts people might possess. God calls us all to some form of service, and each role is just as important as the next.
Some of us may be called to be pastors. Some might be called to lead worship, some might be called to minister, or to lift others up... The list can go on. There's so many ways that we can actively serve the Lord.

So, how can YOU be a part of missions work? Well, if you feel led to you can find plenty of good missions organizations to donate to. Or, you may be led to do some missions work. If you ever feel that urge I STRONGLY suggest looking into some short terms missions. There are many churches and organizations that offer some short term trips. These trips help you get an idea of what kind of work the long term missionaries might do. This can help you realize whether or not this is something God is really calling you to do. You'd also be amazed at how such a trip can change you regardless of where God leads you later on.

And you don't have to serve in any overseas missions work to be doing missions work. As I mentioned before, there's plenty of needy people all around us.
How can you reach them? Read over some of those verses again that I mentioned. Be a light to those around you. God gives you many opportunities to open up and witness to others. Learn to see these opportunities and to take advantage of them.
Help people out. Give a friend a ride... give someone a hug... buy someone a meal... etc... the list goes on and on and on.
Jesus said, whatever you do for the least of these you do for Him.
There's no greater cause in all the earth than to reach the lost.

Dear Lord I just thank you for all those people that are going forth and serving in your name. I want to pray for their safety and I pray that their work will bear much fruit.
I especially want to pray tonight for those that are not involved in worldwide missions. I pray that they will see the many opportunities all around us to reach out to others in Your name.
It's a hungry world we live in Lord, I pray that you might use us to feed them.

"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:"
- Job 12:7
