Your new life:

Colossians 3:1-17
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

This passage starts out with: "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above"
I love this. Much of the bible teaches us how we ought to live. Many people choose to overlook such passages and want to believe that it's perfectly fine to do anything you want in life and there are no consequences at all. The truth is, as I mentioned a couple weeks ago, there are consequences to sin... and beyond that, God DOES want us to live a better life.
As a brief side note, I want to share my personal thoughts on this... I don't want to leave God out of a conversation like this... but, the truth is, if we could live by the guidelines set before us in the Bible... if we could stay away from things the bible suggests we stay away from... if we could focus on the things the bible tells us to focus on... well, if we could do that, our lives would be far happier and easier than we could imagine.
But, many of us either live in sin, or fall back into it from time to time... God and Jesus aside for a moment, if we could live the way we should, the world would be an awesome place. But the truth is, we don't live like that... and the truth is, we are not capable of living like that without God.
Back to the topic at hand... God does want us to live better lives... and He wants that for us so that we can live better lives. He doesn't give us guidelines just to give us rules and order us around. He is like a loving parent that is training us up so that we might succeed in this world. He has our best interests in mind.

Verse 2 says "Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."
That verse reminds me very much of another verse...
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

I love that verse. It is good to think about good things, very good. And you know, the more time we spend thinking about such things, the less likely we are to think about and do bad things.
Anyway, the rest of this passage goes on a bit more to talk about what kinds of things to stay away from and what kinds of things we ought to do.
Verse 3 says: "For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God."
There are several verses in the bible that mentions us being dead... dead to sin, but alive in Christ. That is pretty awesome if you ask me. So, being new creatures in Christ, we are to leave the old behind us.

Verse 5 lists some of the things we are to stay away from. More than that, the KJV says to "mortify" such things. The NIV says to "put to death".
Then it lists some things which we are to put to death. You can read the KJV above, but here is the NIV's translation of those things. ": sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry."
I believe that to some extent, most of us are still affected by such things at one time or another.
Verse 6 says that God's wrath is coming because of such things. If those things cause God to be wrathful, I think it's a good idea to stay away from them.
Verse 7 mentions that we used to walk in these ways, in the lives we once lived. Past tense. as in, NO LONGER. We are new creations and live new lives now.
Verse 8 lists a few more things we are to remove from our lives: "anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth"
I think it makes perfect sense to keep those things out of our lives, but take a good look at them... Those are quite common in this world aren't they...
Verse 9 says not to lie to one another because we have taken off our old selves with its practices.
More and more verses saying how we are new creatures and we are to live new lives...
Not only have we put off the old... verse 10 goes on to say that we have also put on the new man which is "being renewed in knowledge in the image of its creator"(NIV). Wow. Our new lives are amazing.

Verses 12-14 mention the things we should put on instead of those things of old.
"clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." Forgive each other... and above all of these, love one another...

Now as I mentioned earlier, and in other topics, much of the world wants to live in sin. Many people, Christians included, want to go on living their old lives. Their old lives seem fun or something, and on top of that, change is hard. People don't like to change, and people don't like to feel judged. So, many will discount topics such as this. Many will choose not to think of such things.
Read through this whole passage carefully. Read about the things that God doesn't want us to to. In all seriousness, is there any benefit in doing those things? Would are lives not be better if we could stay away from those things? And read about the things God does want us to do. Wouldn't life be wonderful if we could do such things?
As I mentioned earlier, God isn't just laying down rules for us. It is His desire that we live a better life. This is our new life in Him. If we want to live this new life, this life He wants for us... this life that is better... we need to leave the old life behind us.
Do you want a better life? Do you want the new life God has in store for you? It is within your reach. Though staying away from some things may be tough at times... and doing the good things like being humble, merciful, forgiving one another, and more, that too can be difficult at times. But I promise your life will truly be blessed when you leave your old life behind and take on the new life God has for you. So...
"If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above"

Dear Lord, thank you so much for all you have done for me. Thank you for life. Thank you for offering me a new life in you. Thank you for providing a way for me to attain a new life. Father I ask that you give me the strength to face each day as I seek to do your will. Thank you for your word and the reminders to do what is right. Thank you for showing me a better way. I lay my old life behind me Lord and with it my old ways.

happy Easter.
Don't have time to read or reply this week.
Job hunting takes a lot of energy. but I know it will be worth it. Someone suggested nannying. it's beena while since I have been around kids. Maybe McDonalds is hiring. It is an honest job right? A full days pay for a full days work! nothing wrong with that is there?
Will try to check in later.
