Forbidden fruit...

Post by millipede »

I think most of us know this story... Adam and Eve placed in a garden that we often try to imagine... and in the middle, two trees...
Genesis 2:9
The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
I was looking at this passage as I was putting together some other thoughts about this. But I had to stop and think about this. Genesis mentions two trees... The main character of the story(as far as trees go) is the forbidden one...
Genesis 2:16-17
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
One thing worth noting here is, there were two trees mentioned that were in the middle of the garden. The tree of life was NOT mentioned as forbidden.
That is, the tree of life was there and Adam and Eve could have eaten from it. I sit here thinking... WHY? If there was a tree of life in front of me... and a tree of knowledge of good and evil that I was not supposed to eat from... it sounds like an easy decision to me.
But then I remind myself of human nature. Look at the "knowledge" we choose to consume today. consider the tv shows we have... We have talk shows where all they do is talk about who is cheating on who and who's the baby's father, etc... How many "entertainment" shows are there that do nothing but gossip? Court shows, including divorce court. Seriously, people sit around watching other people get divorced and argue over things. These shows are actually popular enough to be on tv. That's not the kind of knowledge I'm interested in. But, this is human nature. I guess.
So, along comes the serpent...
Genesis 3:4,5
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
This passage is interesting for two reasons...
1. We are STILL tempted by this... Christianity is continually being watered down... oh, the bible didn't REALLY mean this, or that... or, God surely didn't mean this... or... None of that applies today...
We are STILL tempted by such falsehoods... and sadly, people buy into the lies. Oh so many topics I could choose to elaborate with here. But think about it, I'm sure you know what i mean... One example I've written about on facebook several times and that is the pope... a supposed figurehead of part of the church, has gone so far as to say God is not a divine being. God's word is watered down and misquoted and it is USED to push agendas and false teachings... and, people go ahead and eat it up.

2. Look at the last part... "knowing good and evil." We've been conditioned to lose our discernment with this haven't we? (people as a whole that is)
I sort of already mentioned some things that would fit here but, I found that part of the passage funny because, Adam and Eve now know good and evil... how is it today that is becoming SO blurred?

We've been warned about this stuff...
Isaiah 5:20
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Doesn't that describe today fairly clearly? There's actually a lot the bible says that could explain today...
2 Timothy 3:1-7
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
I could pick this apart and really start to typing but this is getting long enough???
Side piece of humor here... In the last days people will be incontinent? (vs 3) I guess that explains all the bladder control commercials on tv today. Truthfully, the word has other meanings that I am SURE are what was meant there... but, I kind of laughed a bit when I read that.

Where am I going with all of this? We're STILL being tempted aren't we?
What would have happened if Adam and Eve chose fruit from the other tree???
Genesis 3:22
And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
I guess it's a little late to find out. I've often wondered if that tree is still out there somewhere. Scientists believe some trees live that long... I'll just have to walk around looking for a flaming sword going back and forth? HA...

So, we don't have that opportunity anymore. We can't go back in time to see if we'd pass that test... I'd LOVE to be a bit more naive than I am... and not really know what evil is.

So, those two trees aren't exactly set before us anymore... but, in a way, we face that choice every day do we not?
The tree of knowledge of good and evil is pretty obvious(metaphorically speaking?). TV, books, radio, etc etc etc... We bombard ourselves with a mixture of a few useful bits of info and a pile of filth every day.
The tree of life? You have one of those sitting around somewhere... hopefully without a layer of dust on it. Your bible. Talk about a tree of life.

How often do you turn to that tree? How often do you choose life?

I feel like my thoughts are a bit jumbled here but I do hope it makes some sense and you got something from it.
We sometimes can't believe that while living in paradise, the first humans actually chose to disobey God. But how many times a day do we choose other things IN disobedience?
We are CONSTANTLY tempted... There's lots of forbidden fruit out there calling to us. And, like adam and eve, we're not going to keel over the moment we consume it... but, like them, it does indeed kill us. we rob ourselves of so much when we choose the forbidden fruit over the tree of life.
Open up your bible and study God's word... today, and every day. It's there to nourish you.
How is it we keep choosing poison apples over such delicious and nutritious fruit?

I urge you all to consider these things and spend some time in prayer over them. The temptation is real and it is powerful. What is bad is made out to be good and what is good is made out to be bad. How else can you explain how a growing number of people will call you wicked for believing that an unborn child is actually human and should be protected... among the other things going on in our world today, how can those that want to protect life be looked up on in such a way? This is the false teachings that are often brought forth in ways that no longer sound so evil. Spin is put on things to make them sound GREAT... good... righteous even. We will be led astray... we will go after that forbidden fruit unless we're constantly seeking the tree of life... Constantly seeking after God's truth... not the world's.
So, I again implore you to consider these words and spend some time praying about them.

"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:"
- Job 12:7
