I second that on hating spam. The reason for viruses is the same reason for spam - people with too much time on their hands wanting to do something (morally) wrong, and illegal just because they can and they get a kick out of it. The like seeing deticated admins and mods fighting it, especially when they cant do anything about it. I've seen some pretty disgusting stuff in spam/trolling form, in face most recent today :o ... I am considering reporting some of it to the Abuse email for their IP (any canada/US based anyway).

In the past week I've gotten about 4 or 5 spam emails... might not sound like a lot, but it's more than I normally get and definitely more than I like.
Some of them you can tell are randomized and not necessarily sent to my specific email address... but others... I'm starting to wonder if I need to change my email address. I have several... this particular one that gets the most spam is the one I use on all the sites I go to. I'm very careful about where I give it out but, it obviously got out somewhere it shouldn't have... that or someone I know gave it out for me... I unfortunately know people like that. :(

blech I can't stand it.

I usually have 3 email addresses.
1. Is my personal email address, which only my friends and I use. Since I only give this out to them it gets no spam. I may use this for paid services or service i know for a fact wont sell my info.
2. An email for "junk". This i use for signing up for free services. I pass this out like crazy and use it everywhere, its gets spam but it doesn't really bother me anyway.
3. Webmaster Email. I own and manage my own website so this is the one I use to allow users contact me via email. I am very careful not to just post the whole address, in fact nowhere on my website shows the whole email address. The only way you retrieve it is if you go to my contact us page and enter in the captcha image to see the email address. I get 0% spam to this address (so far so good :D).

For the discussion forum, like phpBB said, the Q&A Captcha is the only captcha that is not "hacked". The GD Captcha (like this site uses), recaptcha, GD 3D Captcha, etc, is hacked no matter how its configured, so these captcha's are worthless if you aim to prevent all spambots. best method is setup Q&A captcha and enter in a good question that the answer can't be figured out with a quick google search, but is very easy for humans. Eg. What color is the sky is a really bad question and if you use it, you might as well not use any captcha.

phpBB never suggests banning IP addresses since a lot are dynamic and proxies and it will only drive you crazy in the future, and banning emails are only good to stop human spam, not bots. Spam bots can be 100% prevented, what you need moderators for is human spam, thats all moderators should put up with and you shouldnt try preventing human spam. Deal with it one on one.

With that said, i estimate phpBB 3.1 will be out by the end of the year. It is gonna have a new plugins system which will not require file edits to install mods... and 3.0.8 allows you to install new captcha plugins available on the site and it does not edit any files since its a plugin not file edits. they're improving :D

yeah, I have several email addresses. The one that gets the spam is an alias. At least, it seems most of them go to that one. Some are "undisclosed recipients" and some are variations of my alias email. Rarely, if ever, do they go to my main address...
Im not sure where or how my alias email got compromised, but it's still not often enough for me to change it yet.
But my main address... unfortunately, that's what I used to registering my domain and so, anyone can look it up. :(
oh well.
I think spammers need to have computer privileges taken away for life.

This forum rarely gets spammed. Then again, it rarely gets posted to. :(
I look forward to new versions of phpbb. Installing mods without file edits? That would be quite nice. Some of those installs are overwhelming. And then, some have updates... and then, what if you want to uninstall? I like things simple and those are not always simple.

Hopefully some day this forum will pick up again and become at least visible/popular enough that I have to worry about spam a little more. For now, it's not a big deal.

Have you tried out automod? Does the file edits automatically... I can't wait for 3.1 either.

I've never tried automod. Was just looking at it... will have to give that a try next time I install something.
Some of those mods will say 5 minutes... they often take longer than that for me.

LOL the time on them for me is worthless because I always run into problems when installing a mod from scratch, Automod makes things much easier 90% of the time but it too will sometimes mess up, so gotta be careful and need to backup.

A lot of spammers in the last week or so... Interesting. Two spam posts did not have ANY links in them... no spam in their profile... What did they do? They replied to a random topic with an EXACT copy of a reply someone else posted a couple years ago. Quite odd. Why would they copy a reply from one topic and post it as a reply in another? Spammers sure are weird. :/

This list is getting long... spam is such a disgusting and unhealthy thing. :( Wish those people would do something productive with their time.
