Psalm 1
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

A pretty straightforward and yet quite powerful verse to open up the book of Psalms.
The overall theme here is brought up in so many chapters. It must be something important eh?
Read the first verse there. You might read it and say "well duh..." Of course it's something you already know. But, do we live up to all of this as faithfully as we should?
We of course do sin... and, I imagine at times many of us do spend time with sinful people. Some of us might even spend a lot of time with them. Now, of course we can't avoid sinners... we're ALL sinners after all right?
Well... there's a difference between us being imperfect and sinful in nature, and living in sin. There are many who live their lives completely in sin and do not fear the Lord. Though we may want to witness to such people, a passage like this is guiding us to not associate with such people, as in "hang out" with them. No matter how strong a person might feel in their faith, we are weak. Human kind is weak. And when you spend much of your time with certain types of people, quite often you end up blending in with them.
So... what happens when you spend all of your time with sinful people who do not fear the Lord? You may find yourself not being so Strong and Fruitful as the tree that is described in this passage.
So, as it says... Do not walk in the counsel of the ungodly...
Delight in the law of the Lord and meditate on it day and night... Do we do this as often as we should? Would we benefit from being more faithful to such a calling? Of course.
Do you want to be a nice tall, strong tree, full of healthy green leaves and an abundance of fruit?
Or, do you want to be like the chaff that is blown away in the wind?

I'm going to be honest here and tell you straight out that I am not nearly as strong in my faith as I would like to be. I recently watched a video on youtube because it mention Christians. It turned out to be someone tearing apart Christianity. It made me sick to my stomach watching it. This person was telling people that if they were intelligent, then they would not believe in God. Well, I promise you there are plenty of intelligent people out there that could be fooled by such a video. Now, I had no doubts in what I believe, but I for one would not have been able to stand up to such an attack as well as I'd like. I could not so confidently defend myself if I were called to right then and there. Thankfully there was a young man who posted a video that completely tore apart all that this other person had to say. He backed up everything he said, and answered EVERY question this other person had, using examples straight from the bible.
Want to be STRONG in your faith? Want to be fruitful?
Or, do you want to be blown away in the wind?
My friends, as Christians we NEED to be strong in our faith.
Read through the scripture above again... meditate on what you learn in the Bible day AND night. Walk not in the counsel of the ungodly....
And then, you will stand the test...

Dear Lord, thank you for all you have done for us. Thank you for this very day. Thank you for taking my place and bearing my burden.
I pray that we would learn to live outside of the counsel of the ungodly. Help us to discern such influences you would want us to stay away from.
I pray that you would put a passion in our hearts to study your word, to meditate on it, and to spend more time in fellowship with you. I pray all these things not only for our own strength, but also for our witness to others. For without strength in you we'll never be effective in our mission. Thank you so much Lord for teaching all of this to us through your written word...
