unknown flower

Postby millipede » Sun Oct 05, 2008 10:42 am

A few years back I was over at a friends house and saw this weird flower. The stems have no leaves on them, but the flowers themselves were pretty wild. I didn't have a camera to take a picture at the time... but later I tried looking up what those flowers were. I tried off and on at different times and never could figure out what it was. The flower didn't look like any wildflower I knew, but the family that lived there didn't plant them.

Anyway... I was over there recently and there they were, in bloom again. Once again, no camera in hand. At the moment I'm leaning towards some sort of lily or something, as the lady told me there's a few more every year. So, I'm guessing it's something that spreads by the bulbs, underground.

Well... I went back another day and made sure to bring my camera :D

I have been busy and haven't had any chance to look them up, so I still don't know what they are. They are pretty though.

It looks similar to a bergamot or bee-balm. When did it bloom and what kind of leaves did it have?

hmm... I posted the picture in October, so I'd guess I took the picture in September some time. It's still plenty warm here in September...
And... there really aren't any leaves at all on that thing. It's just a stem with flowers on the top... kind of odd...
