Your bird sightings!

Postby millipede » Sat May 10, 2008 5:27 pm

I'm sure not all of you are as into birdwatching as I am... not that I'm a total nut about it. But we've had so many this year I just can't help but love sitting here watching them. And becuase I've seen some I've never noticed before, I decided I really should make a list of what I've been seeing. I'll edit this post here with my list in it as I find more. Feel free to do the same.
Since I see many at my feeder, I will put an * next to the ones that have visited the feeder.

Birds I've watched IN my yard this year. (2008)
Bald Eagle (flies OVER our yard every year)
    *Baltimore Oriole
    *Blue Jay
    *Brown-headed Cowbird
    *Cardinal
    *Carolina Chickadee
    Carolina wren
    Crow
    *Downy Woodpecker
    Eastern Bluebird
    Eastern Kingbird
    *Gold Finch
    Great Blue Heron
Green Heron (nesting in my yard)
    Hairy Woodpecker
    Hawks - several different ones
    *Indigo Bunting
    Pileated woodpecker
    *Purple Finch
    *Red-bellied woodpecker
    Rose-breasted grosbeak
    Ruby-throated hummingbird
    Sparrows
    *Tufted Titmouse
    Turkey vulture
    *White-breasted nuthatch
    Yellow-billed cuckoo
    Yellow-rumped warbler

Well, I've not been keeping up with a list or anything, but I've seen several types of birds in our yard:

Blackbirds
Cardinals
Crows
Eastern Blue Bird
Mockingbirds
Robins
Sparrows

cool...
I've been seeing more of a few birds, like hummingbirds... and less of a few others lately.
There's a few more I want to add to the list, but I'm not 100% sure on all my ID's.
I think we've seen some catbirds... But I'm not entirely sure... some of them look kind of alike to me.
This Great blue heron that flies over every day flew over REALLY low the other day. And I had a vulture flying through my yard, like WAY down low... not sure if it saw something to eat or something...

Green Herons
Egrets

Cool...
I believe you saw the Carolina chickadee though. The black capped, according to my books, isn't found in Louisiana. The Carolina chickadee is, and they look very similar.
The woodpecker may have been the pileated woodpecker. It's a BIG woodpecker. Besides the ivory billed(I believe), the pileated woodpecker is the largest in the US. They're pretty cool.
I have a picture of one somewhere but it isn't very good. They fly away rather quickly if they think they're being watched.

At the moment I'm only listing birds I've sighted in my own yard. I may add another part to the list for birds I've seen elsewhere.

Oh... anyone have any goals for birds they'd like to see?
I'm hoping to get a picture of a painted bunting this summer.

I saw a young rose breasted grosbeak today. :D The pair I saw last year must have stuck around and had babies! I tried to get a pic but I was far away and my camera doesn't zoom that far. Hopefully I'll be seeing them again anyway. ;)

Cool...
I need to find where the picture I took is. I had to use the digital zoom as it was a ways away... but, you can at least see what it looks like.
They're a pretty bird if you ask me.

Lets see... I haven't seen anything amzing this year, but here goes. A few of these I haven't actually seen on our property, so I'll mark them with a asterisk.
~Bluejays
~Cardinals
~sparrows - house, field, song, and white crowned
~meadowlarks
~grackles
~starlings
~red winged blackbirds
~chickadees
~wrens - carolina (they're nesting in our barn right now!) and house
~swallows - tree and barn
~pigeons* (except for mine, lol)
~orioles*
~goldfinches
~house finches
~indigo bunting*
~robins
~chicken hawks (sharpshinned and Cooper's hawks)
~red tailed hawks
~buzzards
~mourning doves
~bluebirds
~flickers
~woodpeckers - mostly red-bellied and downies - I;m not sure if I've seen the peliated ones yet or not. Those are the giant ones, CB
~crows
~rufous sided towhees
~canadian geese (I saw some on the highway right outside town one morning on my way to work - a pair and 3 or 4 little babies. They were ADORABLE!)
~mallards
~chimney swifts
~killdeer

I haven't seen any cool birds of prey this year - I have seen Kestrels, Peregrine Falcons, and Bald Eagles before. I may have seen a couple owls - but it's hard to remember what I saw when.

you know... I think "cool" can depend on what you see on a normal basis.
Some of the stuff you see in your yard all the time, I might not... so if it showed up in my yard it would seem pretty cool.
I've seen a few ducks flying over, and geese... the geese are easy enough to identify as Canada Geese, but I only see them in passing... but the ducks... they fly high enough that I can't get a good look at them... so ANY ducks at all in my yard would be pretty cool.

I've seen a few red-winged blackbirds... but not in my yard. I wouldn't mind seeing a few here...

You know... I need to get back to bird watching... Besides those herons, I haven't been watching as much lately.

I saw a pair of good ole California Quail the other day on my bike ride. :D Haven't seen them in a while.
