Matthew 7:24-27
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock;
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that hearth these saying of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

I'm sure any of you that grew up in a church have heard this passage, or at least hear this sung in a song. Ever think much about it? You might stop and think, this means that I need to build my house on a rock, and that rock is Christ Jesus.
While this is good thinking, this is not quite what was being said here. Look at the first line. "whosoever heareth THESE sayings of mine, and doeth them"
What sayings? Well, read ALL of chapter 7 there. Actually, read ALL of Matthew chapters 5 through 7. The sermon on the mount. This short passage I have above is PART of that sermon. So, "these sayings of mine" is referring to all that he has just said. And wow is there a lot of good stuff in there. It would take a LOT of typing to go over all of the things Christ said during this sermon. I urge you all to read through that sermon and stop to think about each of the things he is telling us. Are you hearing them? Really hearing them? And, are you doing them?
There's quite a bit of advice in that passage, that sermon. But, Jesus himself says that if you hear those sayings and do them then you will be like the wise man that builds his house on the rock. Rain will rise up around you. The winds will blow. But, your house will not fall.
Now, read through that sermon and make sure your house is secure :D

Jesus, thank you for all the wisdom you have made available to us. Thank you for teaching us your ways. I pray that we might all pay close attention to your teachings so that when the storms rise up around us we will not be shaken.
Amen
